Hakka Delicacies At Kampung Kanthan, Chemor

Five days after the Tanah Hitam, Chemor foodie trip, we headed back to Chemor again but this time our aim was Kampung Kanthan to taste the popular Hakka delicacies like the Hakka Yong Tau Foo and Lui Cha (herbal rice). We only found out that the Lui Cha or herbal rice is only available during the weekends at the restaurant.
Coming from Ipoh, after the Chemor East Ocean Seafood restuarant, take the left turn to Kanthan. Keep a lookout for this yellow arch on the right side and drive through this arch into Kampung Kanthan.
From the arch, make a left turn on Lebuh Kanthan Baru.
Restoran Chong Chew or Chong Chew Coffee Shop is on the right side.
But before heading towards Restoran Chong Chew, our friend took us on a tour around the Kanthan village.
Passed by a vacated empty house.
Lemon Grass plants growing on the left.
After a short tour, we headed back to Restoran Chong Chew.
We were here about 11.30 am and these were the remnants of the stuffed items or stuffed liew. Egg plants on the left and bitter melon or bitter gourd on the right.
Steamed glutinous rice with chicken (loh mai kai) on the steamer tray plus other steamed varieties.
Steamed brown sugar sponge cake (ma lai gao).
These were from the economic rice stall.
Spicy fragrant chicken (ma lat kai) and stewed duck (right).
Captured this through the glass of the rice stall.
To start off, we ordered a big steamed bun (tai pau), 4 pieces of stuffed tofu (white & friend), bitter gourd and egg plant or brinjal to taste.
Then a bowl of plain rice porridge...
plus stir fried bitter gourd slices and spicy fragrant chicken to go with the plain porridge.
3 people's brunch.....oh, wait!
We also added a plate of flat steamed rice noodle or chee cheong fun with wild boar meat and potato curry.
Our orders completed, for the time being.....
Happily enjoying our food....
Then we saw this lady delivering something we have waited for,
the Hakka kueh or cha guo.
These are the Hakka kueh or cha guo. Delivered just before 12.00 midday.
The dumplings come in 5 different types of filling - Chinese sweet turnip (sengkuang), peanuts, salted preserved veggie, chives (kow choy) and leek.
Out of the 5 types of filling, we ordered 4 excluding the sengkuang.
We exposed the filling to show the inside but it looked messy.

So get rid of all that is wrong in your life, both inside and outside,
and humbly be glad for the wonderful message we have received,
for it is able to save our souls as it takes hold of our hearts.

    1. Mun, I like best is the hum choy filling (salted preserved veggie) because it is a bit sourish.
